Do These Vein Symptoms Feel Familiar?
A varicose vein doctor can look closely at ongoing heaviness, swelling, visible veins, or nighttime symptoms and help determine whether vein care may be appropriate.
Heavy, Tired, Aching Legs
Your legs may feel tired or achy after a long day, especially when you have spent hours standing.
Visible Bulging, Twisted Veins
Blue or dark-purple veins may become enlarged, raised, twisted, or increasingly noticeable beneath the surface of the skin.
Ankle & Lower Leg Swelling
Swelling around the ankles or calves may cause tightness and can make your socks or shoes feel less comfortable.
Night Cramps or Restlessness
Cramping or a persistent urge to move your legs may become especially noticeable when you are trying to rest.
Itching, Burning, or Throbbing
Some affected veins may be accompanied by itching, warmth, burning, or a throbbing sensation along the leg.
Skin Color or Texture Changes
Brownish discoloration, hardened skin, or slow-healing venous ulcers may develop as venous insufficiency progresses over time.

Understanding Venous Reflux Before Varicose Vein Treatment
Before undergoing varicose vein treatment, you should be aware of Venous Reflux. Healthy veins in the legs have one-way valves that help the blood flow back up to the heart. When those valves weaken or fail to close completely, blood starts to back up and pool in the veins of the lower legs. The movement back is called venous reflux and can be associated with chronic venous insufficiency.
As the pressure increases, affected veins may become elongated, swollen, knotted, and/or raised above the skin. Some people may experience ongoing swelling, skin alterations, or venous ulcers if venous insufficiency is not treated. The varicose vein specialist will assess these symptoms and subsequently be able to use an ultrasound mapping procedure to pinpoint the places in the veins where reflux is taking place.

Modern Treatment Modalities
Ways We Treat Varicose Veins
Your varicose vein specialist can review your ultrasound findings, symptoms, and concerns with you before discussing which treatment for varicose veins may be appropriate.
Endovenous Laser Ablation
During EVLT, we guide a thin laser fiber into the affected vein after the area has been numbed. Laser heat is then used to close the vein from within, allowing blood to move through healthier vessels.
Vein Condition
- 30 to 45 minutes
- Performed in the office
- Local numbing is used
- Laser-Based Vein Closure
Radiofrequency Ablation
Radiofrequency ablation uses controlled thermal energy delivered through a small catheter to close affected saphenous veins. We perform the procedure with local numbing, with the approach designed to limit bruising and discomfort.
Thermal Energy
- Treatment through a catheter
- Controlled radiofrequency thermal energy
- Walking after the procedure
- Designed for Minimal Bruising
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy
If the veins are varicose, branching, or curved, we inject a medical foam that is specially formulated for the job and guide it along the length of the vein as it moves using real-time ultrasound. The goal is to close the targeted vein without making a surgical incision.
Micro-Injection
- Ultrasound guidance during treatment
- No surgical incision required
- 20 to 30 minutes
- No Incisions
Ambulatory Micro-Phlebectomy
When varicose veins sit close to the skin and are especially prominent, we can remove selected veins through tiny micro-puncture openings. The procedure uses local numbing and does not require stitches.
Micro-Removal
- Tiny openings for vein removal
- No stitches are required
- Local numbing is used
- Targeted Surface Vein Removal
How We Treat You
Your Vein Treatment Care Pathway
Initial Consultation
A varicose vein doctor starts by reviewing your symptoms, visible veins, concerns, and treatment goals during an initial examination.
Duplex Ultrasound Mapping
We use duplex ultrasound to look for valve leaks and map areas of venous reflux before recommending a treatment plan.
Insurance Pre-Authorization
Our team works to ensure that pre-authorization and coverage are coordinated and, if applicable, available prior to placing a medically necessary procedure on the schedule.
In-Office Procedure
Laser, radiofrequency, or sclerotherapy can also be done in the office under local anesthesia, if clinically indicated.
Walk-Out Guidance
After treatment, we provide walking and activity guidance based on the procedure performed and your individual clinical needs.
Insurance & Financial Coverage
Understanding Coverage for Varicose Vein Care
Coverage for treatment for varicose veins can depend on medical necessity, your specific plan requirements, and authorization.
Commercial Plans
Coverage may be available through Horizon BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Oxford, and QualCare for EVLT, RFA, and medically necessary sclerotherapy, depending on individual plan requirements.
Medicare Coverage
Medicare Part B may cover diagnostic duplex ultrasound mapping and minimally invasive vein closures when clinical symptoms are present and medical necessity requirements are met.
Pre-Authorization Support
Our insurance coordinators can submit ultrasound documentation and request prior approval before treatment, giving you a clearer picture of available benefits before a procedure is scheduled.
Self-Pay Options
For patients with high-deductible plans or out-of-network coverage, we offer flexible financing, CareCredit, and bundled self-pay pricing options that can be discussed before care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Varicose Vein Treatment FAQ
Is varicose vein treatment painful?
EVLT and RFA are performed with local numbing to help keep you comfortable during the procedure. We can walk you through what the visit involves and discuss the option that fits your care plan.
How long is recovery after a vein procedure?
Walking is part of post-procedure care, while light daily activity depends on the procedure performed and your clinical needs. We will give you personalized activity instructions based on the treatment you receive.
How does blood circulate after a treated vein closes?
When a malfunctioning vein is closed, blood is redirected toward healthier deeper veins instead of continuing to pool backward. We can show you what we see on ultrasound and explain how the recommended treatment is intended to address it.
Does insurance cover varicose vein treatment?
Symptomatic, medically necessary treatment may be covered by Medicare and many commercial plans, depending on plan rules and authorization. Our team can review available benefits and coordinate pre-authorization before treatment is scheduled.
Should I see a varicose vein doctor or varicose vein specialist?
An evaluation can help determine whether your symptoms may be related to venous reflux or chronic venous insufficiency. We can arrange a consultation and duplex ultrasound mapping when it is clinically appropriate.
